Special classes and some regular sessions will be in the Forum West rooms.

Welcome to the 29th Silent Weekend!

The “No Talking” rule will begin immediately after Thursday evening’s orientation.  This “No Talking” applies no matter where you go … even if you go to the mall!  Please respect your fellow participants’ desire to experience an authentic experience and sign EVERYTHING.  If you go to the restaurant or shopping, use paper and pencil to communicate with non-signers.
There will be a special “Time-Out” staff person for beginners and intermediates.  If you feel overwhelmed and frustrated and need to talk, Maureen Longo Tuccelli is available for a short chat.  Pick up a “help” card at the registration desk and present it to Maureen – she will take you to a time out room where you can talk.  She is not always easy to find and that experience may help you better understand what Deaf people go through when they try to find an interpreter.
The number of classes offered to beginners, intermediates and advanced was based directly on your responses in the registration form as to what signing level you feel you belong in.  If you put down “novice” or “survival” or “beginner”, you should attend the beginning track.   Intermediates should attend the intermediate track.  Those identifying themselves as advanced or superior signers or interpreters should attend the advanced track.   Unless otherwise indicated, the special choices and workshops labeled ALL LEVELS are open to all but may be too challenging for beginners and too basic for advanced.

There are no interpreters provided for anything other than the opening and closing, nor is there anyone to mirror what is being signed behind you.  You must visually find the communication in the room.  Deaf people must do this everyday.  While we hope you will learn what is presented, when you miss something, realize our goal of providing you with a “Deaf-like” experience has been achieved and that, too, has merit.

Extra time has been added between classes to allow you time to use the restrooms, do CEU paperwork, allow presenters time to prepare for their next topic, etc.
The ASL Improv Night is a separate event not associated with DrSign.  It will begin after the close of the Silent Weekend.  Tickets are available for $10 advanced purchase and $15 at the door from Jon Ziev.
On the back of your program book is an evaluation form.  Please evaluate each of your classes as you complete them and tear out the form and place it on the registration table before you leave.
The location of next year’s event will be announced on the website www.DrSign.com     As presenters are selected for 2009, their topics will be posted there as well.

Sincerely,
Mike Tuccelli AKA “Dr Sign”

CEU PAGE

This year we are using RID Activity Report Forms.  Please be sure to write your name and number legibly.  We considered your request for using the sticker system, but RID now charges for those and your registration price would have gone up.  That system also requires a plentiful staff, which we don’t have.  Because we are no longer using Scantrons and because we have extended the break times between sessions, we hope this part of the weekend will run more smoothly than in the past.

The following list represents the sessions that have been approved for CEUs.  Often presenters will teach the same topic at a lower level.  They tech it more slowly and without covering all the information.  Therefore, ONLY the workshops at the time listed below are valid for receiving CEUs.  If a session was granted CEUs and is only taught once with advanced and intermediates together, it receives CEUs.  Unless otherwise noted by GS (General Studies), all workshops are in the professional studies category.
